Bar Association Unites To Oppose Gauhati High Court's Relocation To North Guwahati

The GHCBA argues that relocating the High Court to a remote area without sufficient infrastructure will disrupt legal proceedings, create logistical challenges, and adversely impact litigants, lawyers, and the judiciary as a whole

GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court Bar Association (GHCBA) has expressed firm opposition to the Assam government's decision to relocate the Gauhati High Court to Rangmahal in North Guwahati. At a general meeting held on Thursday, January 9, members of the association unanimously denounced the move, citing concerns over accessibility, inadequate infrastructure, and the lack of stakeholder consultation.

The government's decision to proceed with land acquisition for a proposed judicial township at Rangmahal has sparked outrage among legal professionals. This comes despite previous assurances from the Chief Minister of Assam that no relocation would occur until the completion of the ongoing bridge construction and commitments from the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court to involve the Bar Association in such critical decisions.

The GHCBA argues that relocating the High Court to a remote area without sufficient infrastructure will disrupt legal proceedings, create logistical challenges, and adversely impact litigants, lawyers, and the judiciary as a whole. The association has demanded an immediate halt to the project, urging the government to consider the interests of all stakeholders and the public.

The meeting saw the participation of senior advocates, including Anil Kumar Bhattacharjee, former Presidents Mrinal Kumar Choudhury and Arup Borbora, as well as senior advocates Millie Hazarika and Krishna Kanta Mahanta. Many Bar members also attended, reflecting the discontent within the legal community.

The session was presided over by GHCBA President Kamal Nayan Choudhury, who reaffirmed the association's commitment to opposing the relocation through democratic and lawful means. Secretary General Girin Pegu initiated the meeting, outlining the association’s concerns and resolutions.

The GHCBA has resolved to escalate its opposition to the highest levels of the judiciary and the executive. The association plans to seek urgent consultations with the Chief Minister and the Chief Justice to present their case and advocate for reconsideration of the relocation decision.

In collaboration with its Advisory Committee, the GHCBA is determined to safeguard the interests of the legal community and ensure that any decision affecting the High Court is made with proper consultation and due consideration of its far-reaching implications.
