This year, the tableau features the Charaideo Maidam, recently included in UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites.

Talking to GPlus, a senior official from the Directorate of Cultural Affairs said, “We chose Charaideo Maidam because of its UNESCO recognition. It represents an important part of Assam’s history. The tableau will be exhibited in Red Fort this year.” The Maidams, hemispherical burial sites of Ahom royalty, resemble ancient pyramids and are a unique cultural site in the region.

At the forefront of the tableau is the Xorai, a bell-metal artifact traditionally crafted in places like Hajo and Sarthebari. The Xorai symbolises respect and honor in Assamese culture.

The tableau also highlights Satriya Dance, a classical dance form introduced in the 15th century by Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev. Three models depict this dance, which is an integral part of Assam’s spiritual and artistic identity.

Behind the Satriya models, elements of the Bihu festival are displayed, including traditional instruments like the Dhol and Pepa, along with iconic items like the Phulam Japi, Phulam Gamocha, and Kopou orchid. These items reflect the joy and cultural importance of Bihu, which recently gained international recognition after its dance performance entered the Guinness World Records.

The one-horned rhinoceros, placed at the front of the tableau, draws attention to Assam’s wildlife. This species, found in Kaziranga National Park, has been a key symbol of Assam. Kaziranga, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985, is home to over 2,500 rhinos and remains a major attraction.
