The order was issued by District Commissioner and DDMA Chairman, Sunit Sattawan, on Sunday, April 27.

Departments and contractors failing to comply will face legal action under the Disaster Management Act, 2005, the order stated adding it has been issued to ensure cleaner, flood-free streets in Guwahati, and comes into effect immediately.

This decision comes in response to reports from monitoring committees, which noted that silt had remained on drain sides for over 24 hours in some cases, worsening waterlogging and creating unhygienic conditions.

Sattawan stressed the urgency of adhering to the directive, warning that delays would be considered a hindrance to public service. Contractors found guilty of non-compliance will face action under specific sections of the Disaster Management Act. The order is now in effect and will be enforced immediately to reduce the risk of urban flooding during the monsoon season.
