Assam’s Eminent English Professor Deven Dutta Passes Away

 

GUWAHATI: The former vice-principal of Cotton University, Deven Dutta breathed his last on Friday at the age of 81 due to heart, kidney and lung issues.

The academician and former professor of English at Cotton University passed away at 12:10 AM on August 18 at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), as per reports.

It is to be mentioned here that apart from being involved in various social organisations, the educationist-turned-consumer rights activist-turned-politician also took part in stage shows.

Born on April 5, 1944, at Nazira in Sivasagar, Deven Dutta was a resident of the Sundarpur area in Guwahati.

He completed his post-graduation in English in the year 1965 and started his career as a professor of English at Cotton College.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to Twitter to put out a message, “I am saddened to hear of the passing away of eminent educationist and professor Shri Deven Dutta. The death of former Cotton College Professor Dutta, who made an important contribution to the development of language and literature, is an irreparable loss to the social and educational world of Assam. I wish him eternal peace and extend my deepest condolences to his bereaved family. Om Shanti."

Assam Education Minister, Ranoj Pegu also tweeted about Dutta’s demise, “I am saddened to hear of the passing away of Mr. Deven Dutta, former Professor of English, Cotton College (now University), eminent linguist and eloquent man His death is an irreparable loss to the intellectual field of Assam. I wish Mr. Dutta eternal peace and extend my deepest condolences to his bereaved family and friends.”

According to sources, Dutta’s final rites will be performed at Nabagraha crematorium.
