GUWAHATI: In a significant milestone, the Assam State Zoo cum Botanical Garden in Guwahati has welcomed a new rhino calf, born to a female rhino named 'Pori'.

This marks the zoo's first rhino birth since 2013, when a calf was born under an ex-situ conservation program. The zoo is now home to eight rhinos - four females and three males, plus the new calf.
Assam's Environment and Forest Minister, Chandra Mohan Patowary, took to social media to celebrate the news, praising the zoo's staff for their dedication and commitment to animal care. Patowary credited Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's leadership for Assam's strides in wildlife conservation, calling the new birth a testament to the efforts of Assam State Zoo officials.
The successful captive breeding reflects the ongoing progress in rhino conservation in the region, known for its commitment to protecting this iconic species.
