GUWAHATI: The Assam government has issued an office memorandum to intensify the detection of illegal immigrants crossing the state's international borders, following reported rise in such incidents. The directive, released on Saturday, September 7, outlines measures for the Assam Police Border Organization to strengthen border security and curb the influx of illegal migrants.

From January 2024 to date, 54 illegal immigrants have been detected in Assam. Karimganj district reported 48 cases, Bongaigaon 4, and one each in Haflong GRP and Dhubri district. Of these, 45 individuals were sent back to their country of origin, while nine were arrested in Karimganj. There are also reports of suspected non-Indian nationals in Upper Assam and North Assam districts.

The Assam Police Border Organization has been directed to increase patrolling and surveillance at the borders, improve coordination with the Border Security Force (BSF), and strengthen intelligence gathering. Additionally, community awareness programs will be launched to encourage residents to report suspicious activity.

The government will activate local functionaries, such as Village Defence Parties (VDPs), Gaon Panchayat members, and land revenue staff, to monitor new arrivals and gather information on individuals of suspected nationality. This data will be used to conduct field-level enumeration of potential illegal immigrants. The government has also decided to deploy additional forces in sensitive border districts and enhance documentation checks at Border Outposts to identify individuals without valid identification.

The biometrics of suspected individuals will be collected. If these individuals possess Aadhaar, PAN cards, Voter IDs, or passports, those details will be recorded for future reference.
Authorities will work with local functionaries to monitor new arrivals in villages and ensure legal action is taken against illegal immigrants.

The Assam Police will intensify efforts to track down and arrest individuals who have absconded after being declared foreigners by the Foreigners Tribunals or the Illegal Migrants Determination Tribunals.
