Assam: Two die of Encephalitis caused by litchi toxin

GUWAHATI: As many as 23 persons have been suspected to be down with Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) in Cachar district of Assam and two persons out of the six positive cases detected have died so far.

Reportedly, two persons - Rajendra Roy (80) of Kalain and Sanku Das (65) of Rajatilla - succumbed to the disease in the months of March and May respectively.

Further, three positive cases of encephalitis have been detected at Jalalpur in Katigorah block. The other positive cases have been detected at Sonai, Harinagar and Silchar (Urban).

It may be mentioned that the only positive case found at Harinagar has been vaccinated and the patient is recovering now. Similarly, out of two positive cases detected at Sonai, one patient has been vaccinated.

Routine vaccination is in progress across areas in Cachar district where the disease has been found to have infected people.
