Assam To Pay ₹10 Lakh Each To Families Of Coal Mine Accident Victims

GUWAHATI: The Assam Cabinet has announced several crucial decisions following a tragic incident linked to illegal mining in the state on Thursday, January 16. Among the measures, the government will provide ₹10 lakh ex gratia to the next of kin of four deceased individuals. Similarly, the families of five other missing persons will also receive ₹10 lakh compensation, irrespective of whether they are found dead or alive.

A judicial inquiry commission, led by Anima Hazarika, a former Judge of the Gauhati High Court, will also be established to investigate the matter and determine responsibility for the tragedy. Additionally, a Special Investigation Team (SIT), overseen by Anima Hazarika, will probe the incident further, based on the existing FIR.

Furthermore, the Cabinet has decided to frame a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to implement a blanket ban on rat-hole mining across the state. The Mines and Minerals Department has also been directed to take immediate steps to shut down all existing rat-hole mines, working in consultation with central agencies to ensure compliance.
