Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the project’s development on Monday, March 31, as he laid its foundation stone in Biswanath.
Once operational, the 446-meter-long ropeway will provide a safer and faster alternative to the existing boat services, reducing travel time to approximately three minutes per trip.
Designed by IIT-Guwahati, the ropeway will have a capacity of 300 passengers per hour. Biswanath Ghat, known as ‘Gupta Kashi,’ is a key pilgrimage site, and the new transport link is expected to improve accessibility for devotees and tourists alike.
Sarma, on the same day, also inaugurated an automatic driving testing station in the district. Built at a cost of ₹17 crore, the facility will test the fitness of commercial vehicles such as buses and trucks and issue certification through the government’s Vahan portal.
