Assam To Get New Legislative Assembly Building In August

GUWAHATI: Assam is all set to inaugurate the new Assam Legislative Assembly building in August this year.

The present Assam Legislative Assembly building was a makeshift arrangement for the last 51 years after the capital was shifted from Shillong.

Initially, the state assembly started functioning in September 1972 from a tea warehouse. The first session in the Dispur building took place on March 16, 1973.

The foundation stone for the new assembly building complex near Janata Bhawan was laid in 2009.

Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in this regard took to Twitter to put out, “In August 2023, Assam will get its new Vidhan Sabha Complex. I inspected its progress yesterday.”

The exterior of the new assembly building was designed by Simplex Structure, while the interior was designed by JD Creations, as per reports.

The chief architect overseeing the project is Dulal Mukherjee, with the Assam Public Works Department supervising the entire endeavor. Spread across a 10-acre plot, Assam's new Vidhansabha or Legislative Assembly building complex comprises three structures: the main assembly building, Annexe I building, and Annexe II building.

The main assembly building spans an area of 18,459 square meters and features a pitched roof with a glass top to allow natural lighting. It is a two-story structure.

The new building has modern infrastructure and it has extra sitting space as well in case the number of MLAs rises in the near future.
