Assam To Establish New Medical College In Darrang & Restructure Health Blocks Across State

GUWAHATI: The Assam cabinet has approved the construction of a new Medical College and Hospital in Darrang at an estimated cost of ₹572 crore. It has also given in-principle approval for restructuring Health Blocks in alignment with Co-Districts and Legislative Assembly Constituencies.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma disclosed these decisions following the cabinet meeting held on Thursday, March 27.

The institution in Darrang will have 430 beds and will admit 100 MBBS students annually. The cabinet also directed the addition of a BSc Nursing school and a GNM school alongside the medical college project.

As for the restructuring of health blocks, the move has been implemented to enhance efficiency in healthcare governance by ensuring better coordination at the district and constituency levels. The decision has also arrived following the recent delimitation process in the state.
