GUWAHATI: The Assam government is preparing to crack down on private NEET examination centres after a police probe indicated possible malpractice linked to unusually high scores by some students.

The findings prompted a high-level meeting between Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and officials from the National Testing Agency (NTA) on Monday, April 14. “We sought this meeting following a discreet inquiry by @assampolice where it was suspected that some students clearing NEET in private exam centres in the state were securing abnormally high marks,” Sarma posted on X.

The probe further revealed that most NEET centres in the state were hosted in private institutions, which the government believes may have facilitated irregularities. In response, the state has proposed that all future NEET exams be conducted only in government or government-aided institutions.

Additional safeguards recommended by the government include Aadhaar-based biometric verification, full CCTV surveillance, strict standard operating procedures for handling exam materials, and pre-exam inspections by district commissioners and police superintendents.

Senior civil and police officers will also be deployed for monitoring, alongside sanitation and security protocols at all centres.
