Assam Student’s Crusade against Burning Plastic Forces Municipal Board to Take Action

GUWAHATI: A class IX student from Chabua in Dibrugarh has started a crusade against plastic which has led the Chabua Municipal Board (CMB) and the administration to levy penalty for burning plastic in the open which can harm the public.

Asthanandini Borgohain, a student of Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalaya, Laipuli, started her protest by positng photos standing amidst smoke from burning plastic, by holding pla cards. Her campaign was applauded by the people on social media and later the CMB had to ban burning of plastic in the open.

Talking to G Plus, Borgohain stated that, her motivation came after the people and the administration acted as mute spectators while everyday tons of plastic was being burnt at a road through which students use to commute.
“The smoke from burning plastic was suffocating the students and nobody questioned the people for doing so, thus I took this step to make everyone aware” she added.

The ban on single-used plastic is quite effective in Guwahati, however in other parts of the state, disposal of plastic is a grave concern due to lack of proper solid waste management.
