Assam State Zoo Celebrates Birth Of Hoolock Gibbon

GUWAHATI: Achieving a rare feat, the Assam State Zoo is now home to an offspring of Hoolock Gibbon.

Hoolock Gibbons are found in Northeast India, Bangladesh and Southwest China and is classified as an endangered species.

State forest minister Parimal Shuklabaidya wrote on twitter: “Another feature in the cap.. Please welcome the new born baby of #Hoolockgibbon - a rare and endangered species - at Assam State Zoo. This is the first time in the Zoo's history that a #hoolockgibbon has breed.”

“The success of a zoo is measured by the success in breeding, especially the ‘difficult to breed’ species. The Assam state zoo has succeeded in breeding these difficult species,” the divisional forest officer of Assam state zoo, Tejas Mariswany, told The Telegraph.  

As per reports, the baby was born on August 2 but the authorities did not announce the news of the birth as the offspring was kept under observation.
