GUWAHATI: Assam has spent 6% of Assam’s GDP on both health and education which is more than any other state in the country, said state education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during the Anundoram Borooah Awards ceremony on September 30.

He also stated that Assam has increased its literacy rate and is currently among the top 5 states.
"Some states might have spent 4% but not on both. Our goal is to make Assam a knowledge-based epicentre," said Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The Assam government distributed the Anundoram Borooah Awards among 16,944 meritorious students who scored 75% or more in HSLC exams. The state government has disbursed a total of Rs 34 crore (Rs 20,000 to each student) to buy laptops.

The Minister also said, "A lot of people have criticised the Award as an election gimmick, many asked if we will be able to continue giving this award, but we did."
