Assam Shuttlers Dominate NE Badminton Tournament With Multiple Golds

GUWAHATI: Assam shuttlers have delivered a stellar performance at the Yonex-Sunrise North East Zone Inter-State Badminton Tournament, securing several gold medals across various categories.

The competition was held at the Kanaklata Indoor Stadium in the Radha Gobinda Baruah Sports Complex.

In the women's singles category, Mayuri Barman emerged victorious, defeating her fellow Assamese competitor Suzanne Buragohain in straight sets, 21-4, 21-14, to claim the gold.

Shantipriya Hazarika also won in the Under-19 junior girls' singles category. She outclassed Mizoram's Lalrinkimi, winning convincingly with scores of 21-12, 21-11.

Assam's success extended to the mixed doubles events, where the state's players clinched the champion's trophy in both the senior and junior sections. The senior mixed doubles pair, Sangram Chutia and Manali Bora, showcased their prowess by defeating their Nagaland counterparts 21-12, 21-10. Meanwhile, in the junior mixed doubles final, Shubhankar Dutta and Bhavishya Sangma of Assam overcame a strong challenge from Manipur, securing the title with a 21-14, 21-11 victory.

While Assam's shuttlers continue to shine, their performances in the men's and women's doubles categories have guaranteed them additional medals, as they have advanced to the finals. However, in the boys' doubles final, Albir Aman and Ritu Pratim Bora fell short, earning a silver medal after a closely contested match against Manipur, which ended 21-14, 21-18.

Omar Rashid, the Secretary of the Assam Badminton Association, expressed pride in the team's achievements and announced that the finals for the men's and women's doubles, as well as the boys' and men's singles titles, are scheduled to be played overnight.
