Assam: Section 144 imposed in Hailakandi after mob violence

GUWAHATI: Section 144 CrPC has been imposed by the Hailakndi District administration following a clash between the administration and members of the Muslim community. 

As per reports, a group of people visited the mosque Marwari Patti to offer Friday namaaz. Soon, the mosque was overcrowded as additional number of people came int to offer prayer. Therefore, they decided to offer namaaz on the road outside the mosque.

But, the administration did not allow this citing traffic issue, which eventually resulted in a heated argument between the members present.

When the argument was on, some of the people present at the scene started pelting stones. The angry mob even set vehicles and shops on fire. At least 15 persons injured in the incident.

The clash broke out on May 10 when people were visiting a mosque at Marwari Patti area in Hailakndi.

Following the clash, District Magistrate Keerthi Jalli had issued an order to impose curfew in the town. The curfew will be in place until 7 PM, May 12. 

CRPF and Assam Rifles personnel have also been deployed in troubled and sensitive areas.

Assam Forest Minister Parimal Suklabaidya appealed the people to maintain peace.
