Assam: Schools to Give 50% Fee Waiver for April, No Fee Hike Allowed, Says Govt

GUWAHATI: All schools in Assam have been directed to provide a waiver of 50% in school fee for the month of April, announced state education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in a press meet on April 22.

Given the ongoing crisis due to the coronavirus pandemic, Sarma said, “As per the CM’s wish and after discussing with experts, fee waiver has been done by 50 percent, across the Board upto class 12.”

This will be applicable for both government as well as private schools.

“Those school which already collected, it will be adjusted in May,” he added.

He further said that the schools will not be allowed to hike school fee without government permission and this will be followed till the pandemic is over.

“Any school violating the obstruction will be closed down as per Disaster Management Act,” said Sarma.

Further, private schools have been asked not to cut salary of teachers or workers.

The minister added that if lockdown continues till May 30, then schools might remain open on Saturdays and Sundays and even declared holidays might be cancelled.

“Opening of schools depends on the pandemic. But if lockdown is extended, even then we will try our best to maintain the academic year,” said Sarma.

He added that if the lockdown is till May 30, then 52 academic days are lost, not considering the holidays.
