GUWAHATI: The unemployment rate in India increased to 6.98 percent in October, from 6.67 percent in September. The data is provided by the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE).

Despite a massive surge in the agricultural sector, as many returned back to earn from the soil amid the pandemic, the monthly unemployment rate has spiked by 1.04 percent in the rural sector. Meanwhile, there is a decrease in the urban unemployment rate by 1.3 percent from 8.45 % in September to 7.15% in a month's time.

Although the unemployment rate in Assam is low compared to the national average, standing at 3.0 percent in October, there is a major spike of 1.8 percent from the 1.2 percent reported in the previous month.

The pandemic has rendered many jobless. Yet many enthusiastic youths were seen fending for themselves, either involving in entrepreneurial jobs or taking up agriculture.

However, the Goods and Services Tax (GST) revenue collection in October crossed Rs. 1 lakh crore, a massive rise of 10.25 percent compared to October 2019, despite the pandemic situation.

As per the finance ministry's report, Rs 1,05,155 crore GST was collected in October with 80 lakh GSTR-3B returns filed.
