GUWAHATI: In a recent decision aimed at elevating the standards of Nursing, Pharmacy, and Allied Health Science education in Assam, the state cabinet has approved the formulation of a comprehensive regulatory framework.

The regulatory framework includes a standardised procedure for applications related to Nursing, Pharmacy, and Allied Health Science courses. This aims to simplify the process and ensure transparency.

Based on recommendations from the Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences (SSUHS) and a Task Force Committee, the framework sets detailed norms for infrastructure, academics, teaching facilities, and more. This ensures that institutions meet the minimum standards for quality education.

To ensure fair and uniform admission processes, a Common Entrance Examination (CEE) will be conducted by SSUHS. This CEE will serve as the gateway for admission to both government and private institutions, including those affiliated with private universities or deemed to be universities.

A progressive curriculum will be introduced, emphasising essential skills such as English communication, foreign languages, ethics, and more. Moreover, the regulatory framework introduces Continuous Education Programmes with credit points for participants.

B.Sc Nursing and GNM students will undergo a mandatory one-year internship. For students in Allied Health Sciences and Pharmacy, the duration and requirements of the internship will be determined by the government and SSUHS in accordance with council norms.

The government will provide stipends to eligible Nursing students from government institutes. Moreover, a provision has been made for the renewal of registration every five years for nurses, pharmacists, and paramedical technicians.

SSUHS will conduct Exit Exams for students who have completed their Nursing, Pharmacy, or Allied Health Science courses from institutions not affiliated with SSUHS. This examination is essential for qualifying to register under the respective State Councils of Assam.
