Assam records highest number of deaths due to diarrhea

GUWAHATI: In a major embarrassment to the state health department, Assam recorded the highest number of deaths due to diarrhea last year.

The data was revealed in a report published by Central Bureau of Health Intelligence (CBHI) under the Ministry of Health and family Welfare.

According to the report, there were 439 cases of deaths due to diarrhea in Assam in 2018. In the same year, 2,34,578 cases of diarrhea were detected in Assam.

While, the neighbouring state of West Bengal recorded 22.51 lakh cases of diarrhea last year with 167 deaths.

In 2018, there were 229 diarrhea-related deaths reported in Uttar Pradesh.

As per reports, there were 88,736 diarrhea patients in Assam in 2016, while the number increased to 1,65,347 in 2017.

In 2016, 282 diarrhea patients died in Assam.

Meanwhile, Assam registered 83 deaths, the second highest in the country, due to typhoid in 2018.
