Assam Police registers case to apprehend culprits who forced Muslim man to eat Pork

GUWAHATI: A Muslim man was attacked by a mob for allegedly carrying beef in Biswanath Chariali in Assam. 

Reports suggest, the police have detained at least five people after a viral video showed the man on his knees, begging to be let go.

Shaukat Ali, 68, was beaten on the road and forced to eat pork as punishment by locals. He is currently being treated at a government hospital.

Rakesh Roushan, superintendent of police (Biswanath), said the police had registered a first information report after they received a complaint from one Shaukat Ali that he was assaulted, called a Bangladeshi and forced to eat pork on April 7.

In a video which was circulated on social media, a middle-aged man is seen being thrashed by a mob comprising of mainly youngsters. 

In the video, the mob is heard asking the man, “Why did you come to sell beef?”

Roushan said the incident happened on Sunday evening in Biswanath town, where Ali runs an eatery which serves meat.

An FIR has been registered at Biswanath Chariali PS vide Case no. 80/ 2019 u/s 143/ 341/ 325/ 294(a)/ 295-A/ 153- A(b)/ 384 IPC.

Netizens have condemned such an incident of cow vigilantism after the video made rounds over all social media platforms. Such instances of communal violence are nothing but demeaning to the Northeast region.
