The case, registered under CID PS Case No. 05/2025, includes charges under Sections 48, 152, 61, and 197(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, read with Section 13(1) of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UA(P) Act).
The cabinet directed Assam’s Director General of Police (DGP) to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter. Addressing the media after the cabinet meeting on Sunday, CM Sarma stated that reports and Sheikh’s social media activity indicate that he has made multiple remarks against India, particularly Assam. Given past instances of alleged interference by Pakistani state and non-state actors in Assam, the government found it necessary to conduct an in-depth investigation into Sheikh’s activities.
Ali Tauqeer Sheikh is the founder of LEAD Pakistan, an organization where Elizabeth Gogoi, the wife of Assam politician Gogoi and a British citizen, was previously a member. Assam Police will examine Sheikh’s activities in India and probe potential links between him and individuals or groups allegedly involved in anti-India activities.
Earlier, CM Sarma had raised concerns about Sheikh’s actions in a series of tweets, which were dismissed by Gogoi as false and baseless allegations. However, Sarma suggested that Gogoi might have unknowingly become entangled in a larger operation.
