GUWAHATI: On June 19, a team led by Barun Purkayastha, DCP (Crime) Guwahati headed to West Bengal to arrest Garga Chatterjee who had made derogatory statements against Sukapha, the founder of the Ahom Kingdom, on Twitter.

This was subsequent to CM Sonowal personally directing Guwahati Commissioner of Police (CoP), MP Gupta, to lead a team to investigate the matter and bring back Garga Chatterjee from West Bengal.

However, the Assam Police team failed to do the needful on reaching Kolkota. Speaking to media CoP MP Gupta said, "The Kolkata Police did not extend the required cooperation to the Assam Police to arrest Garga Chatterjee."

Futher, the top cop said that the address of Garga Chatterjee available with the Assam Police was invalid. Also, Kolkata Police did not assist the team from Assam in physically validating the address. Assam Police hence was unable to arrest him and returned empty handed.

Assam Police has booked Chatterjee under Section 153 A of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 67 of Information Technology (IT) Act.
