GUWAHATI: The Assam Police has released statistical data showing a decline in the state’s total number of registered cases, along with a rise in conviction rates and chargesheet percentages over the past seven years.

As per the available data till March, the conviction rate has shown a consistent upward trend. From 5.9% in 2018, it increased to 6.9% in 2019, dropped to 5.5% in 2020, and marginally rose to 6.1% in 2021. It then recorded a sharp rise to 13.5% in 2022, 16.4% in 2023, reaching 22.95% in 2024. Up to March, the conviction rate stood at 25.33%.
In contrast, the number of cases registered annually has declined. While 1,32,783 cases were registered in 2019, the figure stood at 1,21,609 in 2020 and 1,33,239 in 2021. From 2022, the numbers started to fall steeply — 68,937 in 2022, 64,959 in 2023, and 50,215 in 2024. By March, only 11,622 cases were reported.
The chargesheet percentage also highlighted a fluctuating pattern before rising steadily in recent years. In 2019, the rate stood at 48.80%, and it was recorded at 47.80% in 2020. A decline followed with 39.40% in 2021 and 34.30% in 2022. The percentage increased to 52.62% in 2023, 66.71% in 2024, and reached 75.50% by this year.
Additionally, the data provided showed an increased conviction rate in child marriages, reaching up to 55.76% within the past three months. In contrast, 2024 registered 33.66% and 2023 clocked out at 15.54%.
Under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), from July 1, 2024, to March 31, a total of 19,373 cases were disposed of, out of which 15,585 cases were chargesheeted. This translated to a chargesheet percentage of 80.4%.
