GUWAHATI: In a significant development, the Assam Police apprehended Genekelly G. Momin, the District Transport Officer (DTO) of East Garo Hills, on May 14.
The arrest was made by Circle Inspector Siraj Ingti and Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the Agia Police Station, Manimoy Tamuly, who led a police team to the East Garo Hills DTO office at Williamnagar, as per media reports.
Momin has been accused of allegedly being part of a well-organised network involved in the falsification of documents for various vehicles that failed to register, subsequently re-registering them in Meghalaya after tampering with crucial details, including the chassis number, according to the media.
The investigation was initiated after the Assam Police discovered a discrepancy in the engine number of one of Gulam Ali's vehicles on May 4, 2023. Subsequently, two more vehicles were found to be in a similar condition, leading the police to file a case at the Agia Police Station, stated media reports.
During the course of the investigation, compelling evidence against Momin was revealed, resulting in his arrest on May 14, 2023. Gulam Ali and his driver had already been remanded to judicial custody, as per media reports.
As part of their operation, the police seized three vehicles and five registration cards from Ali's possession.
Rakesh Reddy, the Superintendent of Police (SP) from Goalpara expressed gratitude for the collaboration extended by the Meghalaya Police during the arrest of the DTO.
He disclosed that during the interrogation of Gulam Ali, it was revealed that he had engaged in these illicit activities with the active involvement of Momin, the East Garo Hills DTO.
Reddy further disclosed that a list containing approximately thirty vehicles linked to document falsification, which involved tampering with engine numbers and other critical details, had been compiled.
Reddy also commended the Meghalaya Police for their cooperation and stated that an investigation would be launched into the recent fire incident at the DTO office to ascertain any potential connection to a larger conspiracy. It is expected that further arrests will follow in due course as the investigation progresses.
