GUWAHATI: The Assam Police on Wednesday night, April 20, arrested Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani from Palanpur town of the State over a couple of now-removed offensive tweets on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"Kokrajhar police arrested Congress Vadgam MLA Jignesh Mevani from Palanpur Circuit House last night," Kokrajhar Superintendent of Police Thube Prateek Vijay Kumar told news agency ANI.

According to a statement by Mevani’s office, he was arrested from a Circuit House in Palanpur at around 11.30 PM on Wednesday.

Later, he was taken to Ahmedabad and then will be taken to Guwahati by Assam Police, reported ANI.

Mevani's Twitter account shows that two tweets posted by him have been withheld on "legal demand". “This Tweet from @jigneshmevani80 has been withheld in India in response to a legal demand,” the message on the Vadgam NLA’s Twitter read.

An FIR registered at the Kokrajhar Police Station in Assam listed charges like criminal conspiracy, promoting enmity between communities, intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace, and sections of the Information Technology Act against the MLA.
