Assam: Parents Call Off Wedding As Prospective Groom’s Name Uncertain In NRC

GUWAHATI: In a village near Silchar, the parents of a local girl called off their daughter’s wedding as the prospective groom’s name is uncertain to be included in the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

The groom, identified as Dilwar Hussain Laskar (30) had been dating the woman from Nayagram village for a while and together, the couple approached their families and the latter agreed to their marriage and set a date.

However, less than a month since setting the date for the wedding, the bride’s father grew concerned and said that he could not allow his daughter to marry someone whose “citizenship could be questioned.”

Laskar in one of the 40 lakh people whose name did not make it to the draft NRC published in July last year. Even though the final list is yet to be published at the end of August this year, the bride’s father did not want to take any chances and he called off the wedding indefinitely last week.

It should be noted that even though the groom’s family members tried to reason with the bride’s father, he did not budge. Following this, the couple eloped.

Meanwhile, the bride’s father has filed an FIR with Silchar police stating that Laskar abducted his daughter.
