Assam Panchayat Polls: Politically-safeguarded Rhino Poachers draw mixed results

GUWAHATI: In what should have never been considered as a valid candidature, the Congress and AGP both footed one candidate each who were accused of Rhino Poaching.

Congress candidate for the seat of the Suaguri Gaon Panchayat President was Dilowar Hussain, who won the seat with 240 votes and was involved in Rhino Poaching. Hussain was nominated by the Congress Party President of Biswanath Unit to contest in the two-phase panchayat elections. When asked, the Biswanath District Congress Committee on Saturday told the media that the candidate was made to withdraw his nomination. This, of course, was false information.

On the other hand, Ganesh Doley, a candidate from Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) was also accused in a rhino poaching case. However, Ganesh lost the race for the post of the President of the Moridhansiri Gaon Panchayat.

Earlier, the public and nature conservationists had expressed their displeasure for accepting the candidature of tainted people.
