GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court has reversed its earlier decision to halt panchayat elections in nine districts of Assam. This means that the elections can now proceed as planned.

The court's previous order to stop the elections was based on concerns about irregularities in the delimitation process. However, the state government appealed this decision, and the high court has now allowed the elections to go forward.
There will be a further hearing on February 6 to address the outstanding issues related to the delimitation process. If the court finds that the concerns are valid, it could still declare the elections illegal.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had preferred to postpone the elections until April, but the high court's decision means they will happen sooner.
