Assam Municipal Act Gets Makeover For Efficient Urban Management

GUWAHATI: The Assam Government has given its nod to a crucial amendment in the Assam Municipal Act, 1956, with the primary aim of ensuring efficient urban administration. 

The proposed bill focuses on defining the roles and responsibilities of three State Municipal Cadres—Assam Urban Administrative Service, Assam Urban Engineering Service, and Assam Urban Financial Service.

The key areas addressed by the amendment include the modalities for the appointment of staff in municipalities through the approved staffing pattern of urban local bodies (ULBs).

Additionally, the bill outlines rules to be framed for the appointment and conditions of service of municipal officers, emphasising a structured framework for their roles.

Moreover, the amendment delves into the powers and functions of the Executive Officer (Urban Administrative Service), aiming to streamline and empower this crucial administrative role.

Furthermore, it explicitly outlines the roles and responsibilities of the Urban Engineering Service and Urban Financial Service, ensuring a comprehensive and well-defined scope of their functions.
