GUWAHATI: More than 4,500 teachers, whose jobs were considered to be illegal to date, will now be regularised with a proper salary. This was announced by the education minister, Government of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, during a press conference from Janata Bhawan today.

From 1991 to 2001, about 4,000 teachers were found to be excess appointees by the Gauhati High Court. However, many were found to be getting a salary and were also sent for teachers' training.

The Assam government will now be regularising the jobs of 1,576 teachers who were receiving a salary and were also sent for B.Ed training. With effect from 1st November, they will be established as permanent teachers with salary as per the regular pay scale.

Another 2,960 employees who had been receiving a salary, regularly or irregularly, but had not attended any kind of training do not qualify to be regular teachers. However, they will be employed as tutors by the government with a fixed salary.
