GUWAHATI: In a significant legal development, the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) court in Assam's Kamrup district has issued its verdict against a rape accused, resulting in a 20-year prison term.
The individual convicted of the crime has been identified as Ananta Das. He was accused of raping a 7-year-old girl in the year 2016, according to reports.
Investigations revealed that Das manipulated the young victim by persuading her to join him for a walk along a river, where he committed the abhorrent act. Upon learning of the incident, the victim's family wasted no time and promptly registered a case against the accused at the Pragjyotishpur Police Station.
Following a protracted legal process spanning seven years, the accused, Ananta Das, faced the verdict of the lower court. The court, upon reviewing the evidence and considering the severity of the crime, found the accused guilty and subsequently sentenced him to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment. Additionally, the court ordered the convict to pay a monetary compensation of ₹1 lakh to the victim.
