GUWAHATI: A man was apprehended by the Assam police for pretending to be District Executive Magistrate of Titabor on Wednesday, May 19. Biswajit Dutta had put up a printout reading "District Magistrate" in front of a rented car and visited his girlfriend's birthday party at Dhekiajuli, Assam.
He even duped a driver and promised to pay while hiring him. "I took him to a birthday party and he told me that he will stay there. I was asked to go back and then he called me again the next and I took him to many areas. My overall oil expenses were around Rs 5,000," said the driver.
The Cinnamara Police Station (PS) arrested Biswajit Dutta when he himself visited the PS. The matter was confirmed to G Plus by the Officer-In-Charge of the Cinnamara PS.
"As per information, he visits the PS and takes photos of him and tries to establish the links with the police so that he can blackmail shopkeepers later who violate lockdown protocols and take money from them," an official from the Cinnamara PS told G Plus.
Dutta has a history of similar crimes. He claimed to be a part of the District child protection service and a Juvenile Lawyer. In 2020, during the first lockdown, he portrayed himself as a doctor and purportedly sold Tobacco products.
Amid rising cases of COVID-19, the Assam Government has imposed several restrictions in the state. All shops, business establishments shut down at 11 AM while a curfew is imposed from 12 PM onwards every day.
