GUWAHATI: The vital ferry services connecting Majuli and Nimati Ghat in Assam have come to an abrupt halt indefinitely. This unexpected suspension is attributed to the surge in water levels of the Brahmaputra River, a consequence of unceasing heavy rainfall in the region.
The decision to suspend the ferry services was taken by the Inland Water Transport (IWT) Department as a precautionary measure in response to the escalating water levels. Speaking to G Plus, an IWT executive engineer of the Majuli sub-division confirmed the indefinite suspension of the ferry services owing to the torrential downpours in the area.
The sudden suspension of these critical ferry services has left passengers in a state of unease and panic. The ferry route serves as a lifeline for many, facilitating transportation and connecting vital destinations. The disruption in services has triggered concerns about commuting difficulties and the broader impact of the inclement weather.
This situation underlines the vulnerabilities faced by local communities due to the unpredictable weather patterns that have been intensified by continuous heavy rainfall.
The ferry services will be resumed as soon as conditions permit them, as per reports.
