“The Govt of Assam remains steadfast in its commitment to wildlife protection,” the post stated. “In a major breakthrough, @chirangpolice cracked the Manas Tiger Reserve elephant poaching case within 48 hours of the 3rd May incident.”
Authorities also recovered a cache of materials including two SMBL guns, ammo, walkie-talkies and poaching gear from the accused’s possession.
Earlier, the incident involved the discovery of three elephant carcasses in a forested section of the Manas Tiger Reserve. The animals were found under the Panbari Forest Range, near the Palengchi Beat, a stretch close to the India-Bhutan border. Forest personnel on routine patrol first detected the remains, prompting an immediate investigation.
Following the incident, officials have increased vigilance along sensitive forest stretches, particularly those adjacent to the Bhutanese border, to deter further poaching attempts.
Manas National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to a variety of endangered species, including the Asian elephant, and has long been a target of illegal wildlife trade networks.
