GUWAHATI: The government of Assam has already acquired 2,000 bighas of land in Nagarbera in the Kamrup (Rural) district for construction of a Japanese Industrial Township. The government of India is planning to set up the 13th Japanese industrial township (JIT) in Assam aimed at promoting domestic manufacturing and promoting ties between India and Japan.
Industry and Commerce Commissioner and Secretary Dr. KK Dwivedi, talking to G Plus said, “We have already identified an area in Nagarbera in Kamrup (Rural) district; we have been persuading the government of India, Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO) and other concerns for the approval. As soon as we receive the approval the process will start.”

In February last, the Prime Ministers of Japan and India were expected to visit Guwahati for a summit, and accordingly, the Assam government was expecting the announcement of the JIT then, but due to various reasons, the summit was postponed. Hence, the matter got delayed.
“Government of India is considering our request and hopefully something should come up soon,” said Dwivedi.
The proposal was already given to all the concerns including the government of India and JETRO. A JETRO team had even visited Assam last year and identified the land. Accordingly, the Assam government took possession of 2,000 bighas of land.
The government of Assam is now awaiting approval from the government of India which can happen only after JETRO approves the proposal.
The township was planned so that Japanese companies can come and set up their production facilities here in Assam.

The Assam government is planning to develop the area as per the requirement of the Japanese companies so that they can shift their production facilities from other countries like China. Japanese Companies that have production units in other states of India like Gujarat and other western states have been requested by the Assam government to start a unit in Assam as well.
A webinar was organized recently where the Assam government discussed the matter with many Japanese companies and other concerned bodies.
Talking about budget, the commissioner and secretary said that once approval is received from JETRO and the government of India, a detailed project report will be prepared and the budget will be accordingly estimated.
The Assam government claims that it is in talks with many companies that construct international townships.
The Japanese industrial townships are industrial parks with ready-to-move infrastructure facilities, plug and play factories, pre-approved licenses, and investment incentives for Japanese companies.
