This expansion increases the number of medium languages in Assam’s education system from nine to 14, as the development was announced by Education Minister Ranoj Pegu on Wednesday, April 2.

He stated that from the academic session 2025-26, the selected lower primary schools will be officially recognised as "Mising Medium Lower Primary Schools." Additionally, Mising will be available as an optional subject for students at the upper primary and high school levels.

Along with the introduction of Mising, the Assam government has also expanded indigenous language education across the state. Rabha language education will begin in 106 schools this year, while Deori language instruction will be introduced in 28 schools.

Efforts are additionally underway to introduce the Sauthali (Santal) language, with textbook translations already completed.

Other educational measures were implemented, including the regularisation of 25,000 contractual primary teachers and plans for new teacher recruitments. Reforms for board examinations are also under consideration, as board exam centres have been restricted to government-controlled schools.
