Assam Introduces Amendment Bill For Stricter Regulation Of Private Universities

The amendment has been introduced to implement key norms, including mandatory security clearance for sponsoring bodies, a ban on religious conversion activities, restrictions on introducing new technical and medical courses, and government inspections every three years.

This proposed mandatory security clearance will seek to ensure that only credible entities establish private universities in the state.

The restriction on religious conversion activities has been particularly intended to prevent institutions from engaging in practices that could lead to coercion or influence on students.

The bill comes amid growing concerns over the regulation of private universities in Assam, with the state government emphasising the need for stricter monitoring.
