Assam Has Only 7.59 Percent Women In Police

GUWAHATI: The percentage of women in Assam Police stands at 7.59 percent, despite the advisories given by the Centre to State governments on numerous occasions to increase women's representation in the department by 33 percent. This data was provided by Nityanand Rai, Minister of State, Ministry of Home Affairs on March 15 replying to a question in Lok Sabha.

Notably, the total number of women police in the state of Assam is 5,434; of which 5053 are constables, 89 head constables, 33 assistant police inspector/ARSI, 138 sub-inspector/reserve sub-inspector and 33 inspectors/reserve inspectors.

Furthermore, only 68 women are currently holding higher positions in the Assam Police. A total of 45 women are appointed as Assistant Superintendent of Police (SP)/ Deputy SP/Assistant Commandant, 12 as Additional SP/ Deputy Commandant, and 10 as AIGP/SSP/SP Commandant.

There is only one woman in the entire state of Assam as Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG).

It is important to mention that there is no woman officer as Inspector General of Police (IGP), Additional Director General of Police (DGP) and DGP/ Spl.DGP in Assam at the moment.

Out of the actual strength of 20,91,488 police personnel in the states and UTs of the country, the strength of women police personnel is 1,15,504, which is 10.3 percent. 

“All the State Governments have been requested to create additional posts of women Constables/Sub-Inspectors by converting the vacant posts of Constables/ Sub-Inspectors. The aim is that each police station should have at least 3 women Sub-Inspectors and 10 women police Constables, so that a women help desk is manned round the clock," replied Nityanand Rai.
