Assam Govt Sets Up Narcotic Cell Under CID to Counter Drug Menace

GUWAHATI: To counter the growing menace of drugs, the Assam Police has initiated measures to tackle the crisis. 


Speaking to reporters, DGP Assam Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta highlighted that in recent times police has seized illegal substances such as cough syrup, psychedelic Yaba tablets in huge quantity.

“As per the analysis, drug cases have risen by almost 50 per cent since June. This has happened as the police are more aware and proactive now. As such the people arrested have also risen and along with that the recovery of Ganja and heroine has also increased,” said Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta. 


He further touched upon the drug trafficking network saying, "We can't destroy them but we can weaken them."


The Assam Police has necessitated preventive detention for drug traffickers and has started special training from Sub Inspector to Superintendent of Police. Along with that 4 model FIRs will be prepared to file the case against the convicted so that they find difficulty in using the judicial loophole. The Assam police have gone on the aggressive to catch people linked to drugs. 


The DGP also stated the issue of upcoming BTAD elections and weapon recovery undertaken by the Assam police. Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta also revealed that charge sheets for key cases including those of Rituparna Pegu, Sanatan Deka and Prag Jyoti Neog have been filled.
