Assam Government Declares Restricted Holiday For Rongker Karkli On January 5

 

GUWAHATI: The Assam government has announced a restricted holiday for state government employees on January 5 on the occasion of Rongker Karkli, also known as Rongker Puja. This traditional celebration marks the beginning of the Karbi new year and involves the veneration of various deities to ensure the well-being of the entire village.

During Rongker, the elderly male members of the Karbi community perform the rituals to seek blessings for the village, aiming to safeguard against diseases and natural calamities throughout the year while hoping for a bountiful harvest. It is notable that women are prohibited from entering the worship area.

The festivities feature vibrant cultural displays, including traditional dance performances such as Ritnong Chingdi, Nimso Kerung, Hacha Kekan, and Chong Kedam. In addition, attendees enjoy indigenous games and cultural performances from neighbouring states.

As the festival concludes, villagers gather to share a meal, symbolising unity and the collective spirit.
