Assam: Goalpara Becomes First District to Build Road with Plastic Waste

GUWAHATI: Goalpara has become the first district in the state to construct a road using plastic wastes to curb plastic pollution.

Of the total 565-km stretch, 237.652 km has been completed using various green technologies.

The road is being developed under Prime Minister’s Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) and it is expected to improve connectivity in the district.

Since last year, around 37, 260 kg of plastic waste has been used to complete around 45 km of 75 km distance and for the remaining stretch around 25,000 kilos of plastic waste will be needed.

According to a report by the Times of India Goalpara Deputy Commissioner Varnali Deka said that, “When the construction came to a near halt after the bridge at Krishnai was damaged last Macrh, we started exploring alternative green technologies to resume construction.Goalpara is an aspirational district and we cannot afford to halt connectivity project.”
