GUWAHATI: The Dhubri Girls’ College will act as a prison until the floods in Assam recede. Inmates of the Dhubri District jail, which consists of 401 men and eight women, were moved to the temporary prison on Monday night, July 15 after the district jail was submerging.

On Monday evening, floodwaters started gushing into the jail and the police and district administration had to choose a site. They would’ve opted for the Dhubri district library, however, that was flooded too. Thus, the college campus, which is barely 100 m from the prison was chosen.

The inmates have been kept in the first floor of the college building for now.

It should be noted that police personnel have been patrolling the area and an additional police company from Panbari was also called in for help.
