Assam Floods: More than 26 lakh people displaced, 28 districts reeling under flood

GUWAHATI: With the ongoing monsoon rain in Assam, more than 26 lakh people have been displaced from their homes and flash floods have killed at least 9 in the past 72 hours.

According to the Indian Meteorology Department (IMD), there is a likelihood of more rainfall in the state in the next 48 hours.

The deaths were reported in Dhemaji (2), Golaghat (3), Jorhat (2), Barpeta (1) and Dhubri (1). Two other incidents of death due to rainfall-induced landslides were reported. 

Teams of the NDRF and the SDRF are stationed at various flood-affected locations for search and rescue operations. 

As per reports, Additional Chief Secretary of Assam Home, Political, Revenue and DM Department, Kumar Sanjay Krishna said that an amount of Rs 56 crores has been released to different districts to help flood-affected areas. He said, "We have instructed all Deputy Commissioners to provide rescue and relief operations everywhere.”

It is to be mentioned that 70 per cent of the Kaziranga National Park and its 95 camps were submerged in water hence forest guards have also been put on high alert to avoid any poaching chances by hunters.
