Assam Floods: More than 1 million people displaced, death toll rises

GUWAHATI: With the ongoing monsoon rain in Assam, more than a million people from their homes have been displaced and flash floods killed at least 10 in the past 72 hours, state authorities said on July 13.

"10 people have died in separate incidents of drowning in the past three days and more than one million people (have been) affected, with the flood situation turning grave," a state government flood bulletin said.

Meanwhile, the district administrations have set up 62 relief camps in Biswanath, Sonitpur, Baksa, Nalbari, Chirang, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Dhubri, Hojai, Golaghat, Majuli, Jorhat, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia and 20,047 people are currently taking shelters in the camps.

It is to be mentioned that 70 per cent of the Kaziranga National Park and its 95 camps were submerged in water hence forest guards have also been put on high alert to avoid any poaching chances by hunters.
