GUWAHATI: The death toll of animals in Kaziranga National Park (KNP) has gone up to 30, while the carcasses of seven animals, including three one-horned rhinos and an elephant was recovered on Tuesday, July 16.
According to officials, 90% of the 430 sqkm area of Kaziranga is still under water, even though the water level fell by 30 cm on Tuesday. Since the water started receding, carcasses of animals have started surfacing.

Two rhinos died of drowning inside the park and another rhino’s carcass was recovered from a pit outside the park’s boundary. In addition to this, an elephant, a hog deer and two wild boars had also drowned and their carcasses were recovered.
Earlier on Monday, July 15, the flood water had risen above three feet at many places inside the park.
Currently, 169 of 199 anti-poaching camps are still under water, which has prompted park authorities to shift 22 camps to safer locations.
Authorities have also started to issue time cards to vehicles to ensure that a speed limit of 40 kmph is maintained so that animals trying to escape the flooded Kaziranga are able to safely cross the NH-37 highway.

This news comes after eight hog deer and a sambar were killed in collisions with speeding vehicles along the same highway.
