Assam Down Town University faculty held for running pay-for-marks racket

Guwahati: Acting on a complaint filed by Assam Down Town University, the police arrested an employee Gunajit Choudhury who was allegedly running a pay-for-marks racket within the University. This racket came to light after one of the students brought to the notice of the authorities that students were paying to get pass marks. She found the news in social media. Then a complaint was made and a case was registered following which the police arrested Gunajit.

An FIR lodged at the Pragjyotishpur Police Station names four suspected faculty members to be involved in the racket.

Gunajit had been allegedly running the racket since 2012 after he joined the institution in 2011. He had been on the run and finally the police caught him from a hideout in Guwahati. He is also accused of tampering with the marks of the students.

Earlier on 30th June, 2018 one Jal Nuruddin Ahmed was arrested from Barpeta for allegedly conniving with Gunajit and collecting money from students with ‘back’ marks to help them secure pass marks. It is alleged that they have been taking money to the tune of rupees twenty thousand from the students.

According to Purabi Mazumdar, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Noonmati, some more arrests may be made in coming days.
