Assam: Dibrugarh Reports Two Infant Deaths in Less Than 24 Hours

GUWAHATI: Assam’s Dibrugarh district is in shock over the death of two babies within 24 hours.

On 8th November, a hospital in Dibrugarh declared a baby dead. However, just before burial, the child woke up, only to be declared 'dead on arrival' at the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH).

The heartbreaking incident happened at the Muttuck Tea Estate in Dibrugarh district where the compounder of the tea garden's hospital declared the sick child as dead.

“The sick child, a boy aged less than one year, was taken to the hospital where he was declared dead by the compounder. The doctor of the hospital was absent at that time. But when the family was about to bury the child, it started moving. It was then rushed to AMCH, where it was declared brought dead on arrival,” said Hrishikesh Hazarika, in-charge of Lahowal police station to media.

The compounder, Gautam Mitra, has been arrested.

In another tragic incident, a newborn child on ventilator support in the out-born unit died after a fire broke out at the maternity and obstetric ward of AMCH.

The fire broke on the night of 8th November, reportedly due to a short circuit at the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

The fire was contained within 20 minutes. Allegedly, the baby died due to a disruption in the power supply.

However, Prateek Thube, Superintendent of Police, Dibrugarh, told media, "The parents had initially alleged that the death was due to disruption of power following the fire. But when records were checked it was revealed that the child had died prior to the fire incident.”

AMCH officials have also stated that the baby was already in a critical situation when brought in for treatment.
