Assam Congress MP to discuss Bhupen Hazarika's Bharat Ratna row in Rajya Sabha

GUWAHATI: Assam Congress MP Ripun Bora has given zero hour notice in Rajya Sabha to discuss 'circumstances which led to late Bhupen Hazarika's son refusing to accept his father's Bharat Ratna'.

Bora told ANI that he fully appreciates the concern and sentiments of Bhupen Hazarika's son and that PM Modi's government is working against the idea supported by Bhupen Hazarika. Accepting the award will destroy the ideology of Bhupen Hazarika. Bora also said that Tez Hazarika's decision to turn down the Bharat Ratna award is the right step.

It is to be mentioned that Tej Hazarika, son of the late singer-composer and the Bard of Assam, Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, said that the government's decision to confer Bharat Ratna upon his father cannot be accepted which came right after the current political climate of Assam and Northeast, where the region is burning with the decision regarding the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.
